Early last month, K and I visited my family in Iowa. My parents' have two Jonathon apple trees on their farm, which have produced a huge crop over the past few years. During this visit, we spent several hours picking and organizing apple boxes. It's hard to tell from this photo, but the trees were overflowing with my favorite tart fruit!
Until last week, I still had two huge bags of apples stacked on my dining room table. With the last of my apples, I made a few rounds of Maple Apple Crisp and this recipe for Apple Pie Stewed Apples recipe three times. The stewed apples come together so easily in the slow cooker, and your entire house will smell like sweet, spicy apples. It helps to use a new favorite spice that I found this year: Apple Pie Spice.
Apple Pie Spice includes cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Using this spice really kicks things up a notch in apple recipes, compared to using only cinnamon.
It can be overwhelming to look at a huge box of apples and all of the work it takes to prepare for recipes, but I picked up three apple tools to make prep a lot easier: A ceramic peeler; an apple corer; and an apple divider.
For this recipe, I left the skins on and only used the apple divider, but feel free to peel your apples if that's your preference.
I froze my stewed apples flat in small bags, with 1 cup per bag.
There are so many ways to use Apple Pie Stewed Apples. Here are my favorite ideas:
1. As an ice cream topping
2. With yogurt, for breakfast
3. As a chunky, spicy applesauce
4. In a bowl of oatmeal
